JNO. 91 SOLEMN AND IMPRESSIVE CEREMONIES MARK ARMISTICE CELEBRATION HERE) Trees Are Planted In Sunset Cemetery For 31 Men Who Made The Sup reme Sacrifice-Citations For Brav ery Of Champion, Gold and Turner. Solemn and impressive ceremonies were held in Shelby Friday in observ ance of Armistice Day, exercises be ing carried out in the Court House at a community Prayer meeting and in the Graded School auditorium by the xchool children. Youngsters of the town had a Fourth of July spirit in their bones and gave vent to their feelings by noisy pistols, automobile horns, etc but older heads sent up prayers for the Disarmament Con ference in the City of Washington which met Saturday with representa tives from nine of the leading powers of the earth present to discuss a lim. itation or reduction of implements of war. ,, Trees for Deceased Soldiers At the cemetery Friday morning 31 pretty sugar maple trees were planted in honor of the 31 young men who paid the supreme sacrifice and at the foot of each -tree will be placed a jrranite marker with the name of the Foldier the tree represents, together with the unit to which he belonged. Each year the relatives and friends will place .flowers at the foot of these trees to memoralize the boys who died in the service of their country. The Civic Department of the Woman's Club deserves the thanks of the whole community in thus honoring the dead. They have been at considerable ex pense m buying. trees and markers so contributions to the fund will be cheerfully received by Mrs. L. A. Blanton and Mrs. 0. Max Gardner. Misses Moore, Morris, Taylor, Quinn and Lide and Mrs. Ritch were the invited guests of the "Phylsonian Book Club" which met with Mrs. B. C. McCraw, Wed nesday afternoon. After the program a most -delightful social hour was enjoyed. A delicious salad course was served. Miss Sara Taylor of the history de partment, spent the week-end with her parents in Rutherfordton. Rev. J. R. Green of Jacksonville. N. C has accepted the call extended to him by the Boiling Springs Baptist church and will enter upon his duties as pastor December 7., Rev. A. L. Stevens, director of Sun day school work in Western N. C. de livered three very practical and help ful lectures on the work for which our Baptist people are responsible, in this section of our state. " The faculty and student body were grieved to hear of the passing of Vir gil Gardner, a former student of Boil ing Springs High School. An appropriate program was ren dered by some of the students, on Armistice Day, with Miss Attie Bos- tic presiding. Prof. Huggins made a strong plea for each oire present to do everything possible for "World Peace" Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Hamrick spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Barry at Fountain Inn, S. C - - Miss Quinn, Messrs. Joe D. Ham rick, Robert Hawkins and Chas. Gil lespie attended "The Edison Voice Test" Wednesday evening,, and were delighted with its wonderful success. Mr; and Mrs. Ladd Hamrick, Mrs. Ritch. Misss Mettie Parker and a delegation of yung men from, the Athenean, Literary Society, attended the funeral of Virgial Gardner, at Elizabeth church, Friday, November 11th.
